Interactive Abacus
How to Use an Abacus
Basic Principles
- Each rod represents a place value (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.)
- The upper bead (heaven bead) has a value of 5
- The lower beads (earth beads) each have a value of 1
- When a bead is moved toward the divider bar, it is counted
- When a bead is moved away from the divider bar, it is not counted
Reading the Value
- Count the upper bead if it's touching the bar (worth 5)
- Count the lower beads that are touching the bar (each worth 1)
- Add these values together for each rod
- Combine values from right to left (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.)
